Today's technique is a mica dusted box. yesterday I mentioned that one of the demo pieces I usually do is to show the mica dusting technique so I thought it was best to explain what I mean by the term!
This is a really easy way to adapt the look of a die cut and to quickly add some drama to your work. I started by die cutting the background die from a piece of coconut white foundation card into the centre of a piece I have scored as a box lid using the Scandinavian collection background die. Next I added another piece of coconut white card to which I had added a piece of Creative Expressions double sided adhesive sheet to to the back of the die cut so that the sticky is visible through the filigree of the die.
To create the background I simply brushed different colours of cosmic shimmer mica in stripes over the die cut so that it sticks to the sticky parts. I then polished off the excess using my mums old blusher brush. This makes the Mica simply shine and depending on which colours you use and the manner of application the possible effects are endless!To finish I stamped the centre with black archival ink using a sentiment form my daisy Corner set and made the piece into the box lid. I added a large white seam binding bow and a small pearl embellishment to finish.

ReplyDeleteI love the mica technique and use it quite a lot as a background - whilst it adds drama it's not overpowering. And I love the fact that the bow hides some of the sentiment - nice to have to peek to see it all.

ReplyDeleteVery pretty, everything works so well together. I must try the sticky sheet method to see if the mica sticks better to the sticky sheet than to perfect medium or a similar product, which was the way I've done it before, I guess it does and probably the colours are stronger. I also used to do similar making mica powder into paint to create a background for either stamps or dies. Will try it when I get the chance
